Art Jewellery
Art
jewellery can be seen as a works of art that have functions beyond adornment
and the three main functions mentioned by Metcalf. Jewellery artists create
wearable pieces of art that challenge the traditional views of jewellery, as
traditionally, jewellery design is not recognized as a fine art but rather a
craft of a form of applied arts. Some items of jewellery are made to challenge
this notion and to break into the realm of art as they have been created to
express ideas of art: “vision, intellect and concept.” Some debate that jewellery cannot be
considered as art because an art piece is made to stand on its own and to have
no practical function. Yes, jewellery can be used as a medium to express an
artistic concept, but in the world of art, the subject of jewellery has its
limitations, jewellery has a vast number of functions and it cannot exist
outside the realm of the human body. A jewel is made to be worn on the body or
has the potential to be worn, giving it a function.
