Poetry: Phases of a Flower

Below is an image of the installation pieces that I created, Phases of a Flower. Each of these pieces have their own significant meanings. I wrote a set of five freewriting segments that relate to each of the pieces in the installation (Bud, Transcending Bud, Fresh Flower, Mature Flower and Wilting Flower). I then used these pieces of free writing to develop poems to describe each piece in the installation. I have dedicated two stanzas of the poem to each piece in the order above.

Poem:

Phases of a Flower

Her eyes shut closed tight
Delicate, young and naïve
she conceals her face

Tiny leaves still weak,
stiff and stocky, out of place,
she has much to learn

She starts to open,
blooming and growing stronger
a growing flower

embracing changes
wait in anticipation
for her to unfold

She has shown her face
blooming in strength and courage
growing confidence

Petals are dancing
in choreographed movement
nearing her summer

Standing in full bloom
she is tall and confident
her head is up high

Courageous and bold
she’s temptingly tangeable,
her beauty to hold

She’s falling apart
scattering petals around
swept up by the wind

And sewing her seeds
she deposits her knowledge
of new beginnings
