Style Exploration:
Breaking or Softening of Geometry Using Botanical Forms
The brooches by Marian Hosking both have botanical elements as well as geometric forms. The left brooch, Nature is contained by the boundaries of geometry and on the right, the circle is broken or softened by the botanical forms exceeding the boundary.
Sally Grant's etched silver neckpiece is an ideal example of geometry being softened or broken by shapes found in nature. Shape and texture merge to create a grey area between organic and geometric design. Each of the angled geometric links have a unique natural form etched onto the surface. It is as if each is a little portrait that carries onto the next link.
The combination of botanical forms against a dodecagonal shape create a contrast between organic and geometric. I also find the contrast of the canary yellow enamel against the oxidized black silver pleasing to the eye.
